Who might the Raptors be targeting with a second 1st round pick

20 June 2010 8 Comments

This compilation of prospects is meant to be an exhaustive list of who the Toronto Raptors may target if they do indeed land an additional 1st round pick.

Some names stand out above the rest as we are also considering them at #13.

Without further adieu, lets get to the names:

Daniel Orton – The Raptors would love to see Daniel Orton slip in the draft, which is a possibility due to question marks regarding his knees and due to the fact that he was hidden behind DeMarcus Cousins and Patirck Patterson at Kentucky. Daniel Orton however has lottery potential and is likely one of the top targets in this draft as a center with an NBA ready body and defensive skills.  The telltale sign that he probably will not be available when and if the Raptors acquire an additional 1st round pick is that the Raptors are considering him at #13. Rumours have it that the Pacers are now leaning big man in the draft and have scheduled Daniel Orton for a second workout and are strongly considering him at #10.   If he slips to the Raptors at #13 he will be a good pick, if we can acquire him via a deal for a 2nd pick….well we might have hit the jackpot.

Hassan Whiteside
– Hassan Whiteside is another player that the Toronto Raptors are targeting at #13 that may possibly slip far enough that the Raptors are able to land him via a deal for a second 1st round pick. Hassan Whiteside as mentioned above has lottery potential and is the player with the highest upside in this draft. In addition to being considered by the Raptors at #13, he is being considered as high as #5 by Sacramento.  With that said there are question marks about Hassan Whiteside’s maturity, and when you add that to the fact that he is more of a project, he may slip to a position where the Raptors are able to land him if they do indeed net an additional 1st round pick.

Eric Bledsoe
– Bledsoe is a player that the Raptors are considering at #13, and as with Whiteside and Orton, if the Raptors are somehow able to land two players that were considering at #13 than they would have made hardcore Raptors fans around the world very happy. Bledsoe is a lottery talent point guard who had that fact masked as he was forced to play the 2 as Kentucky landed one of the nations top recruits in John Wall.

Larry Sanders – Sanders is another interesting project big man who oozes athleticism. He would be a welcome addition to the Raptors roster and the fans would likely quickly grow an affection for this player due to his high energy style. He is definitely worth a late-round gamble and would help fortify a front-court that is likely to be without Chris Bosh July 10th.

Armon Johnson
– Standing 6′3, Johnson is a prototypical NBA point guard with great size, strength, speed and athleticism, he is also a plus rebounder, a skill that should translate well to the next level. There have been questions as to whether or not he is a point or an undersized 2, but 5.6 assists a game should have answered that question.

Lance Stephenson – Lance Stephenson aka ‘Born Ready’ has an NBA ready body and game and despite the fact he did not do as well as many predicted with Cincinatti should become a very effective role player in this league for years to come. Some team is going to get a steal in this kid and it might as well be the Raptors that snag him. Stephenson is projected as a SG and will be a better pro than prep.

Soloman Alabi – Alabi is the 7 foot Nigerian that Raptors assistant G.M Masiri Ujiri found in his native Nigeria in his Basketball without borders big man camp. Now while Alabi is a couple of years away from being a regular contributor he has immense potential despite the question marks regarding his true age.

Jordan Crawford
– Crawford projects to be a solid scorer at the next level. With that said, that is about all he projects to do, score about 12-15 ppg with minimal peripheral stats. That shouldnt matter to an NBA team but question marks have also been raised about his attitude. Jordan Crawford is best known as the player who dunked over LeBron which subsequently caused event organizers to confiscate all tape of the incident.  Crawford put the nation on notice during the NCAA tournament and let them know he was a player too.

Willie Warren – Willie Warren started the season as a consensus top 5 pick, but after a disappointing season for Oklahoma, Warren has dropped significantly and is now on the 1st round bubble. Adding Willie Warren to whomever we draft at #13 will constitute a very impressive draft haul.

Devin Ebanks – Devin Ebanks visited the Raptors for a workout and despite being on the first round bubble would be a solid addition for the Raptors. Ebanks projects as a Corey Brewer type glue guy and could step right in and start for the Raptors at the small forward position if Hedo is dealt. Ebanks is also a plus defender something that along with his rebounding skills will please Raptor fans.

Stanley Robinson – Robinson is a 6`8 small forward who has been compared favorably to Darius Miles and Luc Mbah a Moute. Robinson is being pegged as being on the first round bubble despite his jaw dropping athleticism. `Sticks` is a tweener as an undersized 4, but could play spot minutes at the 3 while he works on his ball handling skills. Robinson is a project and is probably not the way you want to go if you are spending millions to acquire an additional pick. If we had a 2nd round pick of our own I would advocate for Stanley Robinson.

Greivis Vasquez – Vasquez had a remarkable season (20 ppg, 6 apg) and is still being hailed as a second round pick at best. Vasquez is being projected as a shooting guard in the pro`s and with his college pedigree I don’t really understand it. I would love, I`ll repeat love for the Raptors to spend an extra $1-$1.5 million to pick up an early 2nd round pick to add Vasquez to our roster due to his offensive upside. The fact that he has shaky D however might scare our management off as they are all still suffering from post-Jose Calderon syndrome.

Damion James – James has an NBA ready body and is ready to contribute to a NBA squad right away. Despite this he is currently projected for the late first round. The problem with James is that much like former Raptor Joey Graham he is a natural 4 who seems to be too small to play that position in the NBA full-time. He has some things to work on if he wishes to make the transition the the 3, where if he could make the transition he could become one of the toughest 3`s in the league to guard.

Mikhail Torrence – Mikhail was worked out by the Raptors and is another strong defender at the point guard position. He is yet another combo guard but has true point ability. Based on his nbadraft.net profile he seems like pretty much everything we need in a point guard.

The best case scenario is obviously, as stated above, having one of the prospects we were considering at #13 drop to us to a point where we could acquire an additional pick to land one of our most coveted players. Hassan Whiteside, Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe all fit that category.  If none of those three are on the board we expect the Raptors to target in this order: Larry Sanders, Willie Warren, Solomon Alabi, Lance Stephenson, Armon Johnson, Devin Ebanks, Damion James, Mikhail Torrence, Jordan Crawford, Stanley Robinson and than Greivis Vasquez.

While there are not many sure-fire superstars in this draft this is a relatively deep draft class with intriguing prospects expected to be on the board all the way up to pick #40.  With the Raptors having so many holes to address don`t be surprised to see Bryan Colangelo swap a future second rounder for yet another player he covets.

The Graham – James comparison is totally ridiculous.

    1. Graham has never been a rebounder even in college. James was one of the leading rebounders in the NCAA over the last several years. Rebounding translates to the NBA.

    2. Graham was never the defender that James is.

    3. Graham only had one decent year on offense at OK St. James has had several.

    4. Graham doesn’t have James motor.

The only thing similar is their size.

If I was going to compare James to anyone currently playing in the NBA it would Luc Richard Mbah a Moute except James has more offense is a better rebounder.

    Hey Buddahfan,

I agree, those are better comparisons

We should give Mikhail Torrance a second look, he’s 6’5, true point guard, good defensive player, can shoot (sounds like everything Raps are looking for). The rumor is Raps are looking at Bradley who’s 6’2, a tweener (or an undersized 2), solid defensive player can shoot. But with Turk, Jose (or Jack) all rumored to be shipped out, the need for a true point just became more urgent.

    Hey Bigmanshaq,

Mikhail would be a nice land, but I would prefer to do it in the 2nd round.

I am not as certain we will acquire an additional pick anymore as the Blazers set a crazy market price for picks i.e. BC was trying to weasel a 1st round pick for $2 million and now wont be able to because the Blazers paid $2 million and swapped picks to move up 10 slots. Good thinking buy them because this draft is about 40 deep but it hurts our chances.

Bledsoe, Orton, Alabi, Seraphin (who you don’t mention) and Warren are the ones I’d look at.

    Tim W,

I am pretty anti-Euro players right now, but Seraphin would be a welcome addition
