What did we learn from Andrea Bargnani’s Injury?

26 January 2012 No Comment
Andrea Bargnani’s recent six-game injury can be viewed as a blessing in disguise for hardcore Raptors fans who had numerous questions answered during his absence.

We learned that Ed Davis is not ready for a staring role and still has a lot of work to do on the offensive end of the floor. We learned that DeMar DeRozan is not ready to be a franchise player who can lead his team night in and night out. And we also learned that it is Leandro Barbosa that takes over as our premier scorer when Bargnani is out.

Ed Davis

Ed Davis averaged a pedestrian 5.8 points and 8.3 rebounds as a starter and while his 1.5 blocks per game is a welcome stat line, the rest of his line leaves much to be desired. His general ineffectiveness is sure to end the calls for Davis to start over Bargnani with Bargnani playing the sixth man role. He showed a lot of promise in the rebound and blocks departments but his inability to record even one double double is nothing short of startling.

DeMar DeRozan

Owner of a 17.2 points per game average last year and a 19.9 average after the all-star break, DeMar DeRozan seems to have regressed this season with his 37.6 percent field goal percentage being among the most ineffective lines for a high usage player in the entire NBA (Granger and Crawford are worse). The obvious culprit here is his lack of aggressiveness in getting to the line and his belief that he has become a three-point shooter. These two factors are highly correlated to his decline, and thankfully, because they are easy to spot, they should be easy to correct….if he wants to.

Leandro Barbosa

Leandro Barbosa is the player who stepped up in Andrea Bargnani’s absence averaging 16.5 points per game in his absence, an average that would have been 18.6 if not for his meager 6 points scored in a blowout loss to the Celtics where the core all got an early rest with the game out of hand. Barbosa should be on his way out of town with an expiring contract and the Raptors will be in obvious need in the scoring department when and if a trade goes down.

Andrea Bargnani

Despite his glaring weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball, Bargnani has proven that he is the best option to lead this team night in and night out as evidenced by his 31 point, perfect 12 for 12 from the stripe return to the lineup vs the Phoenix Suns. His shot volume may be up there with the elite of the elite, but in the midst of his best offensive season
