Thorpe: Beal, Robinson perfect fit for Raptors
We at Raptors Digest have been convinced that Bradley Beal would make an excellent selection and if Thomas Robinson is still available…well we could become a real team.
Andrea Bargnani is great but may be better employed as a 17 and 4 sixth man than a 21 and 5 starter.
A frontcourt of Jonas Valanciunas and Thomas Robinson is the type of pairing the Raptors fans could only dream of for their hometown team.
“Perfect fit: Bradley Beal, Thomas Robinson
DeMar DeRozan is a good NBA scorer, but his lack of perimeter shooting and suspect defense warrants looking into a replacement, if it makes sense. It makes sense with Beal, who projects as an outstanding shooter and a very good scorer. He should become a better player than DeRozan in almost every other facet of the game. In fact, adding Beal would allow the Raptors to bring DeRozan off the bench, where he could end up being an excellent sixth man while still being a primary scorer. Both guys could even finish games together since Beal will be able to defend many small forwards thanks to his length and strength. Toronto can’t go wrong with Robinson, either, as he would fill a huge need for athleticism on the front line with the perfect game for Casey — tough and energetic and willing to fight and defend. Robinson would play major minutes as a rookie and improve the Raptors in his first season.”
I have frequently suggested that if we draft Beal that DeRozan should be moved to small forward but here Thorpe is suggesting that we move him to a bench role, but also mentions that they can finish games together due to Beal’s length and ability to guard small forwards.
As far as for Robinson, Thorpe mentions that Robinson has the perfect game and is an ideal fit for Dwane Casey and his basketball philosophy.
Will the Raptors actually have a chance to land one of these players?
This is the sticking point, with Beal and Robinson both arguably top-5 talents in this draft, neither may be around when it is the Raptors turn to pick.
For now all we can do is speculate until we learn where the Raptors will be picking at the end of May.
