Terrence Williams – Should we have passed on him??
First let me start this article by saying I am fully supportive of the DeMar DeRozan pick and we firmly feel he has more potential than anyone else in this draft. However there have been questions, unwarranted or not, about DeRozan’s NBA readiness, and whether or not we should have drafted someone who was guaranteed to contribute right away. I think DeRozan is that man, and DeRozan WILL be an All-Star in this league without question, but there is one player that is going to make us question “How come we didn’t draft this guy??”.
No, not Earl Clark, but rather another player from the same Louisville squad who didn’t get as much hype as Clark around these parts but is probably the best talent of the two.
His name is Terrence Williams, and this is a name Raptor fans are going to get to know very well seeing as he is slotted to be a starter for Atlantic division rivals the New Jersey Nets.
T-Will is a NBA ready defender with ball-handling skills that will dazzle fans. I liked him coming into the draft but really started questioning the passing on him as soon as I saw the highlight package after the Nets drafted him. He is a player with the mental toughness a player playing in a major city like Toronto will need to survive the criticism and praise of the fans.
T-Will is going to be a fantasy sports STUD and should be a serious consideration for anyone wanting a player who can contribute to their squad right away. T-Will was a 12, 8, 5, 2, player last year and with numbers like that from a SG/SF…he will not only be making a case to be ROY of the NBA but also of Fantasy NBA. The most popular comparisons for Williams include Corey Maggette and a poor man’s Andre Igoudola but has also been called a Dominique Wilkins type athlete for his explosive athleticism.
As evidenced by his rebound totals, T-Will is an excellent rebounder for the SG/SF positions. Though only 6’6, as stated above he is a NBA ready defender with a 6’10 wingspan and will be able to defend the SF position in the NBA where he figures to slide right into the starting line-up with Harris, Lee, Yi and Lopez. Now while his NBA 3 point range is not yet developed, playing on a team with shooters like Harris, Lee and Yi, he will be asked to finish around the basket more than be a shooter.
He will make a serious run for ROY, and while he wont put up the leading scoring numbers for a rookie, he will be getting regular playing time and he will be among the leaders in rebounds, assists and steals.
Off-the court questions (not too sure what they are) be damned, this is the NBA where talent trumps all and 11 teams are going to be kicking themselves this season for passing on an elite level talent like T-Will. On the court they question his passion and killer instinct, but playing a bunch of wannabe’s in college is sometimes tough to get fired up for, he is the type of player to raise his game to the level of competition around him.
With that said: Welcome to the NBA Terrence Williams!!
And for all the doubters out there
This is the NBA, and T-Will and the loved ones on his left arm are ready to take the NBA by storm.
