Should the Young Gunz add an Outlaw?

Travis Outlaw: Could he fit with the Raptors?

Drafted straight our of high school in the 2003 draft, Travis Outlaw is the type of game-changer at the 3 that the Raptors are looking for. Granted we still have Hedo on the roster as of now, but Outlaw could also thrive in a 6th man role, and would likely find himself on the court in crunch time where he has proven as a Blazer to be more than capable on hitting the big shot. Travis Outlaw is only 25 years old, has been in the league 7 years and still has not reached his prime.

A quick look at Travis Outlaw’s career numbers of 9.5 ppg and 3.4 rpg may make you wonder why we here at Raptors Digest like a possible Outlaw addition so much….lets take a closer look: Travis Outlaw has put up some monster games thus far in his career, setting career highs with 36 points against Golden State in 2007, other career highs include: 18 free throws made, 15 rebounds; 6 assists, 4 steals and 6 blocks. Most of his career highs came in the 06-07 season. Outlaw averaged 12 ppg, 5 rpg and 2.5 apg in the 6 games he started last season; he averaged 15.8 and 5 in 6 games he started in 08-09 and 18.5 and 4.8 in the 6 games he started in 07-08.

How much will he cost: Outlaw will likely command and get something close to the full MLE. At first glance the casual fan may balk at that hefty a price tag but Outlaw, especially being as young as he is, is worth the investment, especially with rumours floating about regarding the Raptors potential interest in Ryan Gomes for the MLE.

How does he fit with the Raptors?: Outlaw is a great fit as a young, athletic small forward who can rebound with the best of them. He plays above average defense and is a player that, as mentioned above can step it up and bring his game to another level in crunch time. As a 6th man Outlaw would probably be lead the Raptors second unit in scoring and would likely log heavy minutes (20+ mpg). Outlaw is someone that can get to the free-throw line in bunches which is another reason he is viewed as such an ideal fit for the Raptors. And quite honestly, if we do not take restricted free agents such as Luis Scola into account Outlaw is probably the best fit out there for the Raptors.

Couldn’t agree more. He should be at the top of the Raptors’ list. He would compliment the young players very well. And unlike some of the other free agents mentioned, he’s not going to hurt you in one aspect. He’s a good defender, rebounder, is athletic, can shoot and has improved his three point shooting over the years, and he plays well in pressure situations. Plus, he plays SF, which is one of the Raptors biggest needs, whether or not Turkoglu is traded.

Childress is nice, but my only worry is that he’s just not big enough to play SF full time. Outlaw has much more length to matchup against the big SFs around the league.

    Tim,

You are right, with or without Turkoglu SF is one of our biggest needs, and the fact that Outlaw is a clutch performer just makes this fit all the better

Childress would be nice, but I am not much a fan of his skill set except for on the defensive end. He would not be an ideal acquisition.
