Jarrett Jack continues to impress
Jarrett Jack continues to impress with his strong play and makes this writer wonder; has the Jose Calderon trade market dried up so much that Bryan Colangelo could not find fair value for him at this years trade deadline.
As echoed here before the season, Jacks all around game and superior defensive abilities vis a vis Calderon, led one to believe that it was only a matter of time before Jack took Calderon’s starting job, much like he did to T.J Ford last season in Indiana.
Jack has been on fire in March, and has surprised Raptor fans with his spectacular play since the All-Star break. He is showing glimpses of being able to take a step not many casual fans knew he had coming into the league and becoming an elite level (2nd tier) point guard in the NBA.
Jarrett Jack likely would have been a lottery pick in 2005 when he went 22nd overall in the NBA draft; his draft position has caused many to overlook him his entire career, especially considering all the teams he left still need to or needed to address the point guard position after he left.
Jack was not short on lottery talent, but with Chris Paul, Deron Wiliiams and Raymond Felton going to point guard needy Hornets, Jazz and Bobcats respectively, Jack surprisingly stayed on the board until the PG needy (at that time anyway) Denver Nuggets called his name (he was subsequently dealt to the PG needy Blazers for the draft rights to Linas Kleiza and Ricky Sanchez).
Jack has been quietly posting solid fantasy lines/box scores since his time with the Blazers, but somehow he always finds himself competing for a job in a time-share. First it was Steve Blake in Portland, than former Raptor T.J Ford in Indiana, and now the man who replaced T.J Ford in Toronto, Jose Calderon.
Will Jack be able to take the next step?? Ultimately, only time will tell, but given the requisite opportunity, Jarrett Jack definitely has the skill set and the intangibles to make that leap.
Jarrett Jack’s steady improvement is good news for Raptor fans, both because he is a Raptor, and also because his role on the team will play a factor when Chris Bosh sits down and tries to decide exactly where he wants to play for the next few years. Seeing his good friend and old college roommate blossom as a starting point guard on the same team as him will undoubtedly help the Raptors case.
What do you think Raptor fans? Should we move on with Jack as our starter and find a taker for Calderon?? Or is Jack the better trade bait due to his strong play? Should the Raptors just stick with them both?
