Is Wilson Chandler a good fit for the Raptors?
I am sure we were all thinking the same thing, yes, Chandler would be an excellent fit for our Toronto Raptors.
Sports Illustrated has reported that Wilson Chandler has added the Raptors to the teams he is willing to sign with for the rest of the season.
ESPN reports there are issues blocking a Chandler signing most notably the fact that we have only $4.3 million in cap space.
Chandler would be an excellent fit as a do-it-all small forward and will help shore up a position that has been in dire need since Vince Carter moved to shooting guard after Doug Christie left town.
Chandler is the owner of career highs as follows: 35 points, 17 rebounds, 6 threes, 7 assists, 3 steals, 6 blocks. His various career highs really accentuate his upside and versatility at the small forward position. Chandler is also a serviceable defender on the wings.
Is he just using us for leverage?
As stated before we do not currently have the cap space to sign Chandler and ESPN’s Marc Stein speculated that he may be using the Raptors for leverage in negotiations with the Nuggets among other teams.
It hurts Raptors fans to know that space could have been saved or cleared by using an injury exemption to get out of Linas Kleiza’s contract or by not signing useless piece Rasual Butler.
But it almost seems that we have been numbed to Bryan Colangelo’s miscalculations and bad decisions as far as the Raptors roster goes.
Are the Raptors a realistic landing spot?
The Raptors are a realistic option for Chandler if we can manage to shed some salary.
This should not be much of an issue with both Barbosa and Butler in the final years on their deals and veteran teams looking to shore up their depth with just weeks to go before the NBA trade deadline.
Chandler who has yet to be released by his Chinese team has until March 1st to sign with a team, or he may just opt to sign a qualifying offer in the summer in lieu of free agency in 2013.
Signing a one year deal with the Raps would allow him to become a free agent this summer as the Nuggets have expressed that they only want Chandler on a long-term deal as they look to avoid having him hit unrestricted free agency this summer.
Here’s hoping we can get a one year deal done in short order.
