Fresh Look: Patrick O’Bryant

o'bryantThis may be Patrick O’Bryant’s final chance to prove he has what it takes to be an effective NBA player.

Patrick O’Bryant was a project coming into the NBA, and like we have echoed before, with the right coaching and training staff is primed to take the next step in his development. And with a wingspan of 7’5 and a standing reach of 9’4 we are happy he gets to develop on our team.

O’Bryant was brought into the NBA with an emphasis on getting the D he showed in College to translate to the NBA game, it hasn’t yet, but if what Reggie Evans is doing for Andrea Bargnani’s mental makeup is any indication….Patrick O’Bryant may be ready to take that next step this year.

A dominant physical specimen in College it just does not seem that O’Bryant has put on the necessary muscle and weight to become a physical force against the grown men he must face in the NBA. Coming from a smaller school (Bradley) the transition to the NBA has proven a little more difficult for this project big man.

What does he bring to the Raptors??

O’Bryant brings size, rebounding and shot-blocking. Anyone who thinks that he should contribute on the offensive end doesn’t understand that lottery picks need playing time to develop….something he never got enough of in Golden State or Boston. At the current time O’Bryant is slotted to be an end of the bench player or maybe even a game-day inactive. But the fact of the matter is this former lottery pick has the tools to be a starting C in this league, so don’t be surprised if he emerges as our top big man backup by mid-season ahead of names like Amir Johnson and Reggie Evans. Harnessed correctly O’Bryant can become a game changer and unrelenting intimidating defensive presence in the paint.

Here’s hoping he puts it all together this year!!

Here is a short youtube highlight package: Enjoy!!

What type of impact, if any, do you feel Patrick O’Bryant will have on the Raptors this season??

I am probably one among the few who actually believe in POB. All he needs is consistent playing time to enable him to get a feel of the game.

I hope Jay Triano is not like his other coaches who believe in hardcore negative reinforcement.

He is not like a lot of players in his generation who try to show their aggressiveness with chest thumping or yelling out on every occasion to show they mean business but he has definitely shown more hustle in the games I saw him play.

I totally agree, these young guys need the requisite minutes to produce, not everyone’s game will allow them to be effective bench players.

I know it’s only pre-season but the 3 blocked shots is encouraging
