Free Agents the Raptors should talk to

Toronto Raptors potential free agent targets

Travis Outlaw: Outlaw is the type of game-changer at the 3 that the Raptors are looking for. Granted we still have Hedo on the roster as of now, but Outlaw could also thrive in a 6th man role, and would likely find himself on the court in crunch time where he has proven as a Blazer to be more than capable on hitting the big shot. Outlaw will likely command and get something close to the full MLE.

Brendan Haywood: Haywood would be an ideal fit for the Raptors who are still looking for a true center. Some would argue that Solomon Alabi is that true center but he does not project to be ready to be a big time contributor this season. Haywood would fit in perfectly in the middle as his defense and rebounding ability would drastic improvements from what we got at the 5 spot last year from Andrea Bargnani. Haywood is rumoured to be looking for $8-$10 million dollars per season which may price the Raptors out of contention for his services.

Matt Barnes: Matt Barnes is another player that may be a good fit for the Raptors. He wants to play for a contender, but in the end average players usually take the payday over a chance to win a title. Barnes is a good defender with 3-point range on his shot, now while the last thing the Raptors need is another jump shooter, it is his defense that makes him attractive to the Raptors. He will likely demand slightly more than the MLE, but will likely end up with the MLE.

Ronnie Brewer: Ronnie Brewer would be an ideal fit for the Raptors as he is a defense first swingman; he started for the Jazz and was expected to be Rudy Gay’s replacement when he signed elsewhere this summer. Instead the Grizzlies maxed out Rudy Gay and Ronnie Brewer is available. Brewer will likely command and demand the MLE unless you waited until the FA process played out when, if still available, we may be bale to get him for a slight discount. Brewer fits the new paradigm of defense and toughness the Raptors are aiming for, so don’t be surprised to hear that Colangelo engaged in discussions with him.

Marquis Daniels: Marquis Daniels is a solid role player who is known for his attention to the defensive end. He is not a stopper by any stretch, but is an above average defender who can get to the rack and provide up to 15 ppg as a starter. He will likely be hoping for something around the MLE.

Acie Law: Acie Law is a point guard who was never given a fair chance to run a team being stuck on the bench on a playoff contender for most of his career thus far. He has potential and is decent pickup for a backup. He will likely command somewhere between $3-$4 million dollars per year.

Sebastian Telfiar: Sebastian Telfair is a flashy point guard with a flair for the dramatic and may be an ideal fit as the scoring point guard we are looking for off the bench. Telfair will likely command a 4 year deal worth about $4.5 million annually even though his body of work does not warrant such a big payday. Some PG needy team will likely pay, otherwise look for Telfair to latch onto a title contender.

Marcus Williams: Marcus Williams is a true point with exceptional ability, but was the victim of circumstance for much of his career. Stuck behind top-flight PG’s in New Jersey Williams barley saw the floor, ditto for his stints in Memphis and Golden State. If he can get back into playing shape and is given the right opportunity he has the chance to show why he was such a highly regarded prospect. He will likely command $2 million a year.

Jamaal Magloire: Jamaal Magloire represents that true center we need and there is not a better fit out there (cost and position). He plays hard and is gritty and you can rest assured he will never take a night off playing in front of his hometown crowd. Will likely command between $2-$4 million a year.

Ime Udoka: Ime Udoka is another defense first player that fits the new culture being implemented here in Raptor land. He will likely only command the bi-annual exception and is someone the Raptors should consider adding this summer. He may gravitate towards a contender however, but it is worth a phone call to find out.

James Singleton: Singleton is a versatile big man who can play the 2, 3 or 4. You may not have heard of him unless you watch boxscores and/or play fantasy basketball but Singleton is a stat stuffer. He can score, rebound, steal, pass and block shots. He is a great player to have coming off the bench as a 7th or 8th man and can fill in as a starter when and if needed. He will likely command somewhere between $2-$4 million a year depending on which teams signs him.

Ryan Gomes: Gomes is a versatile player, that again, you may not fully appreciate unless you watch box scores or play fantasy basketball. Gomes is able to play both the 3 and 4 and can score and rebound. He is also versatile enough to rack up a few assists a game given the requisite minutes. An excellent glue guy. He may command something between $3-$4 million a year though he may look for more money from a non-title contender if his agent can get him it.
