Fantasy Sleepers: Point Guards
Rajon Rondo – Rondo set the world on fire in the NBA playoffs last year and he is being written off already. Detractors who claim that KG’s absence coupled with the presence of Sheed will limit Rondo’s ceiling have not been following this young guards career very closely. Rondo will settle in and claim his place as a top-10 fantasy point guard.
Brandon Jennings – No one really knows what to expect this year from Jennings. His readiness to be a NBA defender has been questioned and that definitely will not endear him to Scott ‘historically unkind to rookies’ Skiles. With that said Jennings is capable of putting up 18 and 6 a game on a nightly basis; our bet is that Skiles will not keep that potential out of the line-up in favour of the more pedestrian Ridnour.
D.J Augustin – Did Felton resign yet?? It is readily apparent that Felton is not in the long-term plans of the Charlotte Bobcats and this in and of itself is proof enough that D.J, who showed more than a few flashes of brilliance last season will be handed the keys to this O.
Mario Chalmers – Dwayne Wade is still the primary ball-handler in Miami but Chalmers will be handed backup keys to this offence. He has already been posting elite steal numbers and averaging over 5 assists a game. Fantasy land, it’s time to take notice, Chalmers has negligible competition for minutes and will obviously benefit greatly offensively from the open looks and lanes playing in a backcourt with Dwyane Wade will create.
Johnny Flynn – A Raptors Digest favourite for ROY, the signing of Sessions has caused his draft stock to drop drastically. Be assured, Flynn will get his minutes; the T-Wolves have already committed to having both Flynn and Sessions on the floor at the same time. You will be able to land Flynn in the later rounds of your draft and if you have the PG space take a serious look at Flynn, it will pay off by mid-season, especially in H2H leagues.
Andre Miller – Andre Miller is primed to have the season of his career. Being written off in many places due to B. Roy’s ball-handling skills, Miller may take a serious crack at posting a career high in the assist category if the Blazers starting five can stay healthy. The reason he is a sleeper this year is because of the presence of Steve Blake and the aforementioned versatile skills of B. Roy who will be handling the ball a lot. Despite this fact A. Miller will still be one of the most valuable assist sources in the NBA. He is currently being drafted as the 16th – 20th PG and he is destined to flirt with top 10 consideration over course of the season.
Tyreke Evans – Slotted to be a starter with only Beno Udrih to seriously compete Tyreke should threaten for ROY. Expect to see a changing of the guard in Sacramento with the Kings boasting quite a collection of talent in their staring five. Tyreke has ultra-efficient super SG Kevin Martin in the backcourt with him, Nocioni on the other wing and Hawes and Thompson manning the middle. The Kings may not win many games this year but adding Tyreke Evans to this roster ensures they will compete on a nightly basis. One caveat here is that Martin, a candidate to be trade, if he leaves town will likely move Evans to his more natural 2-guard position, where his value will take a hit as he will have the ball in his hands less often and will be relied on more heavily on offence.
Jrue Holiday – Does anyone really believe Lou Williams has what it takes to be an everyday starting PG in the NBA?? While most do not believe so, us included, Williams has a ton of talent….we just think a scoring 6th man better suits his skill set. Couple that with the fact that Jrue Holiday is the superior point guard prospect and Jrue becomes a fantasy sleeper that you may be able to nab in the flier portion of your draft if you draft early; the closer the regular season approaches the quicker the ‘cat will be let out of the bag’ on this situation. Jrue, with his size and length can defend his position better than Lou Williams can which will likely be another factor hastening his ascension to the starting line-up.
