DeMar DeRozan To Start

21 September 2009 2,127 views 4 Comments
DeRo1Its official. 9th overall pick DeMar DeRozan will start the season as the Toronto raptors starting Shooting Guard. There had been some rumours that they would utilize DeRozan as the 6th man, but that picture is messy with Jack also expected to be the 6th man or at least get 6th man minutes.

Marco Belinelli will be DeRozan’s immediate backup and both Colangelo and Belinelli expect the Italian youngster to get enough minutes that someone is going to get fired in Golden State.

Starting is the better situation for DeRozan as he will not be leaned on to provide high volume scoring until he is ready and playing with the starters he will see a lot more 1-on-1 coverage and be able to create for himself and his team-mates. This is an ideal situation for the rookie and for Toronto Raptors fans whom must know by now that DeRozan’s development is a major story line in Chris Bosh deciding to extend or to look to become a #2 somewhere South of the border.

Fantasy Perspective: This is the best situation possible for DeMar DeRozan’s development in both fantasy and real life. The Belinelli threat is real however, so draft accordingly.

Going off of what Jay Triano said in quotes in National Post article from Friday. While he did not come outright and say DeRozan is our starter, he intimated that DeRozan will start because the franchise needs to develop its #9 pick and also due to the fact that he may not see the floor if he does not indeed start, see quote:

“We might start [DeRozan] off in games, let him play with a real good bunch of players because if we don’t start him, maybe we have a hard time getting him in,” Triano said, while clarifying the rookie’s place in the starting five was not a sure thing.

“You can’t let a No. 9 pick rot on the bench and not develop him.”

Barring a pre-season Ron Artest style melt down DeMar DeRozan will start, you just have to read between the lines…you can’t outright name the unproven rookie when he does have some competition that should at least be placated with the illusion that they can start

I am not too sure he will be the one on the floor during crunch time to start the season
