Antoine Wright – Ready To Surprise Raptors Fans
Antoine Wright has some great tools for an NBA 2-Guard. As echoed at RaptorCity.Co.Cc, we like Antoine Wright so much that we were pushing for Bryan Colangelo to make some kind of move to pick up this top prospect from the 2005 NBA Draft during last season when we needed a new 2 and 3. Antoine Wright was rated as the #2 SG Prospect in the draft. His best case scenario comparison most used was Ray Allen/Joe Johnson and his worst case was a Miami Heat Eddie Jones. Not bad comparisons at all; but this begs the question: Being that we are leading up to the 2009-2010 season, what happened to Antoine Wright?? Well, while asking that question one has to take into account that Wright started 56 games for the Dallas Mavericks last year, and would have been a starter had he been on the Raptors last year. He never had a chance to break out with the Nets (behind Vince and RJ) or Mavs as he was a forgotten part of their offense for the most part, but the NBA was abuzz when he got sent to play with Nowitzki and Howard.
Prior to the 2005 NBA Draft Antoine Wright was held out as a “6-7” Athletic slasher with a deadly outside shot who gives 100% effort on the defensive end every play (something Toronto fans are going to love from Antoine Wright).
The knocks on Antoine Wright coming into the league were that he seemed to content at times being a facilitating role player even though he was the obvious star of his NCAA team; another knock being that he had a reputation for not liking to draw contact (which was a strength issue) and preferring to take the pull-up jumper. This former Big 12 Freshman of the year has loads of potential and is the excellent athlete Raptor fans everywhere have been clamouring for.
One might ask after reading this article, where does this leave DeMar DeRozan?? Arguably DeMar DeRozan is the more talented NBA prospect, but Antoine Wright has a very high ceiling as well. And with both DeMar and Antoine able to play the 2 and the 3, we will undoubtedly see this combo on the floor together giving us an young athletic wing combination who can both put the ball on the floor and create for themselves or others. Raptors fans, this is going to be fun to watch!!!
